John Updike, cartoonist


John Updike was an aspiring cartoonist in his teens, dashing off letters to famous cartoonists requesting original art. He was 15 when he wrote to Harold Gray. As a Harvard freshman, he began doing cartoons for the Harvard Lampoon, which he eventually edited. Jeet Heer has written various essays on Updike and his interest in cartooning.
