Ernie Bushmiller and Al Capp

Ernie Bushmiller and Al Capp both drew autobiographical comics. The Bushmiller page was published in the September 18, 1948 issue of Collier's. Note panel seven: Bushmiller's fiance, Abby Bohnet, was the model for Fritzi Ritz. Panels 10-11 are an example of what Spielberg called "bent history". Nancy was actually introduced not in 1938 but in 1933. What happened in 1938 was a title change on the daily strip from Fritzi Ritz to Nancy. (Fritzi Ritz continued in the Sunday sections.)

Al Capp's 34-page comic book, as written by Li'l Abner, includes a sequence showing how Capp lost his left leg when he was nine years old. The comic book was distributed by the Red Cross in 1946 to boost the spirits of thousands of WWII amputee veterans returning to the USA. Below are selected pages. For the full story, go here.
